In 2023, the World Poultry Foundation partnered with Hybrid Zambia to bring over 370,000 day old chicks to Eastern and Muchinga provinces by 2025.

6Addressing Rural Poultry Production Challenges in Zambia

The Poultry Multiplication Initiative (PMI), launched with pilot support from the Gates Foundation (2023–2025) and continued with World Poultry Foundation funding in 2026, has driven meaningful progress in Zambia’s poultry sector through its partnership with Hybrid Poultry

Initially focused on Eastern and Muchinga Provinces, the pilot addressed Zambia-specific market and production challenges, strengthening rural livelihoods and expanding access to affordable, nutritious poultry in underserved communities.

In 2026, the program expanded into Southern, Copperbelt, and Lusaka Provinces, extending its reach and impact to even more farmers and households.

2023-2026

From 2023-2026, PMI’s work in Zambia concentrated on developing a Dual-Purpose Poultry (DPP) supply chain, fostering innovation, and addressing structural barriers. Despite the country’s worst drought in decades, high poverty rates, and infrastructure constraints, Hybrid Poultry, with technical support and guidance from the World Poultry Foundation (WPF), laid the foundation for sustainable poultry practices and transformative change.

Key Challenges Addressed in Zambia:

Innovative Approaches in Zambia:

  • Nutrition and Gender Integration
  • CommCare Data System Adoption
  • Marketing Strategies and Localized Outreach

Lasting Impact

During the program implementation, our partners in Zambia are set to hatch over 370,000 day-old chicks, established over 927 Brooder Units, and supported over 42,000 smallholder farmers across its target countries. In Zambia, the program’s impact is poised to grow even further. Together with our partner Hybrid, we are exploring opportunities to scale nationwide and maximize reach.

Over the next decade, an estimated 2.2 million chicks, over 6,700 Brooder Units, and over 300,000 smallholder farmers across Zambia will benefit from the continued availability of Dual-Purpose Birds (DPP).
