The World Poultry Foundation has been working in The Gambia since 2023, and in 2026 deepened that commitment through a new partnership with Gam Holland Havens. Together with the progress already made, this partnership will bring over 1.1 million day-old chicks to the country by 2027.
The Poultry Multiplication Initiative (PMI), supported by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), is bringing transformative change to The Gambia’s poultry sector through strategic partnerships with local entities. Over a five-year period, this initiative will scale the production and distribution of improved Dual-Purpose Poultry (DPP) inputs to smallholder farmers. By enhancing food security, creating economic opportunities, and empowering rural communities, the project aims to address critical challenges and drive sustainable growth across the country.

From 2023-2027, PMI’s partnerships will focus on establishing the country’s first operational hatchery, developing a strong DPP supply chain, and expanding rural outreach. The initiative will work in collaboration with local partner, GamHolland Havens, to foster innovation, tackle systemic barriers, and support smallholder farmers in improving household nutrition and boosting local economies. Despite challenges such as limited infrastructure, high poverty rates, and youth unemployment, PMI aims to deliver lasting solutions that contribute to a more resilient and productive poultry sector, benefitting communities across The Gambia.

Since the program’s inception, PMI has made significant strides in The Gambia, hatching 710,980 day-old chicks, establishing 394 Brooder Units, and supporting 44,427 smallholder poultry producers.
Building on this foundation, WPF’s work in The Gambia continues into 2027 with ambitious targets: introducing 590,000 day-old chicks, expanding to 260 Brooder Units, and reaching 26,000 smallholder poultry producers. This next phase will further strengthen the country’s poultry sector, improving livelihoods, reducing poverty, and boosting food security for rural farming communities.
