In 2023, the World Poultry Foundation partnered with G Farms to bring over 1.19 million day old chicks to The Gambia by 2027.
The Poultry Multiplication Initiative (PMI), supported by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), is bringing transformative change to The Gambia’s poultry sector through strategic partnerships with local entities. Over a five-year period, this initiative will scale the production and distribution of improved Dual-Purpose Poultry (DPP) inputs to smallholder farmers. By enhancing food security, creating economic opportunities, and empowering rural communities, the project aims to address critical challenges and drive sustainable growth across the country.

From 2023-2027, PMI’s partnerships will focus on establishing the country’s first operational hatchery, developing a strong DPP supply chain, and expanding rural outreach. The initiative will work in collaboration with local partners to foster innovation, tackle systemic barriers, and support smallholder farmers in improving household nutrition and boosting local economies. Despite challenges such as limited infrastructure, high poverty rates, and youth unemployment, PMI aims to deliver lasting solutions that contribute to a more resilient and productive poultry sector, benefitting communities across The Gambia.

Through the direct implementation of PMI, the initiative will produce over 1.19 million DOCs, establish 229 Brooder Units, and support over 39,000 smallholder farmers. In the coming years, this program will provide lasting benefits to The Gambia, setting the foundation for a more resilient and self-sufficient poultry industry that can improve livelihoods, reduce poverty, and boost food security.
Over the next decade, an estimated 7 million chicks, 1,300 Brooder Units, and over 230,000 smallholder farmers across The Gambia will benefit from the continued availability of DPP.
