KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, has called on young people to take up farming and turn agriculture into a tool for empowerment and wealth creation.
Speaking during the Provincial Multi-Planting Season Launch at eNhlanhleni Mission under the Harry Gwala District, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa said the department is determined to make agriculture fashionable and accessible for the youth.
“We want young people to see agriculture as a business and not a backup plan. Farming can create jobs, build industries, and feed the nation. The future of agriculture lies in the hands of our youth,” said the MEC.

Among the young success stories celebrated at the event was Jozana Zilungisele, the owner of JJ Zilungisele Projects (Pty) Ltd, and graduate of the KwaZulu- Poultry Institute training program, a thriving poultry business that supplies chicken products to major local outlets.
Zilungisele, a passionate young farmer, said his goal is to grow his business to supply national retailers such as Spar and Shoprite. “The sky is the limit. All the youth need to do is think big, start small, and step into farming. Agriculture can change your life if you commit to it,” said Zilungisele.
The MEC praised entrepreneurs like Zilungisele for proving that youth can succeed in the agricultural sector with innovation and dedication. She encouraged government departments and the private sector to create opportunities for young farmers to access land, markets, and finance.

“When we support youth like Jozana, we are securing the future of food production in KwaZulu-Natal. The department will continue to provide training, equipment, and mentorship to ensure that young farmers thrive,” said KaMadlopha-Mthethwa.The Multi-Planting Season forms part of the provincial drive to address food insecurity and stimulate local economic growth through agricultural production.
