Training a new generation of South African poultry farmers and poultry farm managers.
Empowering South African Poultry Farmers Through Global Exposure
Many young South Africans, particularly from historically disadvantaged communities, have a passion for agriculture but lack access to the resources, education, and opportunities necessary to pursue a career in farming. This is particularly evident in the poultry farming sector, where expertise and modern farming practices are essential for success in commercial operations. Without structured support, these aspiring farmers struggle to gain the skills they need to thrive in the industry, hindering their ability to contribute to food security and economic development in their communities.
To address these challenges, the World Poultry Foundation (WPF) partnered with the Future Farmers Foundation of South Africa to provide financial grants and facilitate international training opportunities that help transform passionate young individuals into skilled poultry farmers and farm managers. Through the Future Farmers Foundation, young South Africans begin their journey with apprenticeships on local poultry farms, starting from entry-level positions. As they gain hands-on experience and demonstrate their growing expertise, they receive guidance from both farm employers and dedicated mentors from the foundation. Those who excel are offered the opportunity for further development through international internships, which are made possible through WPF’s support.

These 12-month internships take place on leading commercial poultry farms in countries such as the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. In collaboration with the Worldwide International Studies Exchange (WISE) Foundation, WPF ensures that these interns receive comprehensive training that includes both practical farming skills and exposure to global agricultural standards. By the time they return to South Africa, these young farmers are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead successful poultry farming operations, positively impacting their communities and the broader agricultural sector in the country.
By facilitating these international internships, WPF and the Future Farmers Foundation are helping to cultivate a new generation of highly skilled poultry farmers and farm managers. This program not only equips young South Africans with advanced farming techniques but also empowers them to make a meaningful contribution to food security and sustainable agriculture in their communities. Through ongoing mentorship and global exposure, the program ensures that the next generation of South African poultry farmers can lead the way in modern, efficient, and sustainable farming practices.
