South Africa – Strengthening Poultry Skills Through Training and Inclusion

South Africa / Partnership, Training

Since 2017, WPF has partnered with the KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute (KZNPI) to expand training, upgrade facilities, and provide accessible, high-quality education for hundreds of South African poultry farmers each year.

Partnering with Global Poultry Professionals

South Africa’s poultry industry has the potential to lead the region, but growth is constrained by limited support for small- and medium-sized producers. Without access to resources and training, these farmers struggle to compete and scale in an increasingly competitive market.

Since 2017, the World Poultry Foundation (WPF) has partnered with the KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute (KZNPI), a private training facility located in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, to address these gaps. The collaboration began with workshops for government extension agents, technical advisors, and historically disadvantaged farmers, followed by an advanced Poultry Advisory Workshop that deepened skills for field extension agents. These sessions not only equipped participants with technical knowledge but also emphasized a “train-the-trainer” model to expand impact.

WPF also invested in KZNPI’s infrastructure, funding a small hatchery, poultry houses, and updated facilities to enhance training capacity. Funding also went to making building improvements to improve accessibility, such as a wheelchair ramp and dorm facilities with wheelchair access.

The WPF will continue to subsidize poultry training through 2027, supporting courses that cover a wide range of topics such as poultry production, abattoir management, housing, nutrition, and flock management. On average, nearly 250 farmers participate annually across 10 workshops, strengthening the skills and productivity of South Africa’s poultry sector.
