The World Poultry Foundation’s programs in South Africa took center stage at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Howard Davis Memorial Symposium 2019, held at the University’s Ukulinga Research Farm on August 20-21.
Seeing the perfect match to the Symposium’s theme “Developing Resilience through Partnerships and Collaboration,” Lindelihle Nxumalo submitted a winning proposal to tell the story of the myriad partnerships and collaboration of his employer, the KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute, with South African provincial and national government, producer associations, and NGOs.
Highlighting KZNPI’s partnership with the WPF, he proudly described how KZNPI has contributed to increasing the resilience of emerging poultry farmers by expanding knowledge among over 300 poultry farmers, government extension officers and NGO field staff during 15 WPF-funded training courses from 2017-2019. He also expressed appreciation for the expertise lent to KZNPI by visiting University of Georgia Professor Emeritus of Poultry Science Mike Lacy in collaboration with the Fulbright Specialist Program and WPF in the first year of WPF’s engagement in South Africa.
In addition, KZNPI General Manager Janet Lee reiterated the importance of forging linkages to strengthen agriculture in a panel discussion that tackled a diverse range of questions from the delegates
As the first poultry intern to be showcased a year ago on the WPF blog under the WPF/Future Farmer Foundation partnership, Lindelihle also recounted to the largehttp://legacy.worldpoultryfoundation.org/wpf-flagship-initiatives-south-africa/ audience of farmers, agricultural service providers, academics and students of the UKZN School of Agricultural, Earth and Environmental Sciences highpoints and impressions from his year on a US poultry farm. Recounting an isiZulu saying, “If only I could carry your eyes with me for you to see what I saw,” (“amehlo awaphathelwana”), he did the next best thing and walked the audience through a captivating photo montage of his year abroad.
Himself more resilient and competent in his field than ever thanks to the extraordinary overseas experience, Lindelihle is currently Estate Manager and Co-Facilitator at KZNPI.
