In 2023, the World Poultry Foundation partnered with Leecon Poultry and Feed de Nation to bring over 7 million day old chicks to Sierra Leone by 2027.

From Startup to Sustainability: PMI in Sierra Leone

The Poultry Multiplication Initiative (PMI), supported by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), reshaping Sierra Leone’s poultry sector through a partnership with Leecon Poultry Enterprise and FeedDeNation. Leecon, our primary partner, operates the country’s first parent stock farm and hatchery based in Makeni, near Freetown, and has been steadily expanding their reach outward from Makeni. To extend the program’s reach into more remote regions, FeedDeNation is helping to strengthen distribution and farmer engagement, particularly opening opportunities in the southeastern part of the country.

Over the five-year program, PMI will scale the production and delivery of improved Dual-Purpose Poultry (DPP) to smallholder farmers. By empowering communities, enhancing food security, and creating economic opportunities, the project aims to address critical challenges in rural areas and foster sustainable growth.

2023-2027

From 2023-2027, PMI’s strategic partnerships with Leecon and FeedDeNation will focus on building a robust DPP supply chain, fostering local innovation, and tackling systemic barriers in the sector. Despite the nation’s challenging rural terrain, high poverty rates, and limited infrastructure, the collaboration, supported by the World Poultry Foundation (WPF), will deliver impactful solutions to empower smallholder farmers, improve household nutrition, and strengthen rural economies. This partnership represents a crucial step toward establishing a more resilient and productive poultry industry, with lasting benefits for communities across Sierra Leone.

Lasting Impact

Through the direct implementation of PMI in Sierra Leone, our partners in Sierra Leone are estimated to hatch over 7 million day-old chicks, established nearly 500 Brooder Units, and supported over 83,500 smallholder farmers across its target countries. In Sierra Leone, the program’s impact is poised to grow even further.

Over the next decade, an estimated 15 million chicks, 3,000 Brooder Units, and over 500,000 smallholder farmers across Sierra Leone will benefit from the continued availability of DPP.
