Reaching back today to bring you a quick look at an important meeting we attended in May. The third International Seminar on Animal health (SISA 2019) and the 20th Congress of the Latin American Phytopathological Association were held in Varadero, Cuba.SISA 2019 was hosted by The National Center for Animal and Plant Health (CENSA) and the Latin American Phytopathological Association. Their theme “The Agricultural Sciences For One Health” focused on confronting problems that affect the health of plants, animals, people and ecosystems globally. The conference brought together researchers, professors, specialists, students, decision-makers, entrepreneurs, and producers from different sectors and countries to debate the strategies and results of the intersectoral and multidisciplinary collaboration work in confronting those problems.
The World Poultry Foundation sponsored Dr. Joseph Giambrone, professor emeritus of Poultry Science at Auburn University, to attend and speak on behalf of the World Poultry Foundation at the conference. The World Poultry Foundation has worked alongside both CENSA and the Agricultural University of Havana on poultry biosecurity and Avian Influenza (AI) detection and control. In addition to delivering a lecture on AI to the Congress, Dr. Giambrone met one-on-one with Cuban researchers regarding the current state of the layer industry in Cuba. While there, he also had the opportunity to visit farms outside of Havana.
The World Poultry Foundation is grateful for Dr. Giambrone’s expertise and skills. His experience in poultry science and knowledge of the topics addressed are an asset to all SISA 2019 attendees, and we are happy to partner with him in sharing his knowledge as a presenter.
