In 2017, the World Poultry Foundation partnered with Silverlands Tanzania and AKM Glitters to bring over 37 million day old chicks to Tanzania by 2022.

Addressing Rural Poultry Production Challenges in Tanzania

The Poultry Multiplication Initiative (PMI), supported by the Gates Foundation, brought transformative changes to the Tanzanian poultry sector. Given the large size of Tanzania, WPF partnered with two local poultry producers, AKM Glitters and Silverlands, to increase coverage in rural regions. The program focused on addressing critical challenges within the poultry value chain to improve supply chains, empower smallholder farmers, and strengthen rural livelihoods.

2017-2022

From 2017 – 2022, PMI’s efforts in Tanzania were instrumental in building the Dual-Purpose Poultry (DPP) supply chain and enhancing field operations. With guidance and support from the World Poultry Foundation (WPF), the program emphasized targeted interventions to tackle unique challenges, boost branding and marketing, and establish sustainable poultry practices across rural Tanzania.

Key Challenges Addressed in Tanzania:

Innovative Approaches in Tanzania:

  • Large Field Team
  • Training Center
  • Enhanced Sales and Marketing Training
  • Innovative Strategy for Decentralized Field Team
  • Active CommCare Data System Adoption
  • Localized Marketing Strategies

Lasting Impact

Between 2017 and 2022, our partners in Tanzania hatched more than 37 million chicks, established over 5,500 Brooder Units, and supported 2.7 million farmers. By the close of the program, demand for DPP had outpaced broiler growth at Silverlands, with the company actively exploring expansion into Uganda and Kenya.

The program aims to reach 216 million chicks, 33,000 Brooder Units, and over 16 million farmers by 2032.
