Addressing Rural Poultry Production Challenges in Nigeria

The Poultry Multiplication Initiative (PMI), supported by the Gates Foundation, has significantly transformed Nigeria’s poultry sector. Through partnerships with Amo Farms and their Dual-Purpose Poultry (DPP) Noiler bird, the program has scaled operations across Nigeria and beyond, while addressing critical challenges within the poultry value chain to empower smallholder farmers, improve livelihoods, and foster sustainable poultry systems.

2017-2022

From 2017–2022, PMI’s work in Nigeria focused on building a robust dual-purpose poultry (DPP) supply chain, fostering innovation, and navigating the complex socio-political and economic challenges unique to the region. With guidance and technical support from the World Poultry Foundation (WPF), PMI successfully scaled its operations, making the Noiler bird a household name among rural farmers.

Lasting Impact

From 2017 to 2022, partners hatched nearly 60 million chicks, established 11,000+ Brooder Units, and supported 2.3 million farmers.

By 2032, the program expects to benefit 360 million chicks, 66,000 Brooder Units, and nearly 14 million farmers in Nigeria.

Beyond the impact the Noiler has had in Nigeria, the Noiler bird has taken root across Africa, supporting poultry development in multiple countries.
